Senior Women in Policing

Researched and developed initially for the Senior Women in Policing 2009 conference, 'The Dawning of Eve’ by Amanda Osborne explores why women are 'missing’ from top and specialist roles within the police service. This thought provoking 45 minute theatrical production explores how women shape and influence policing in the 21st century.

The play will form part of a national programme destined for roll out across the police service later in the year. It will be shown to mixed audiences to encourage debate and further challenge the thinking around how the service offers all of its employees a rewarding and aspirational working context.

Looking for inspiration…?

The play skilfully underpins and supports leadership programmes and Gender Agenda 2 and can be incorporated as a:

  • 2 or 3 hour event or session
  • one day event  - designed in partnership with individual police forces

Ideally suited to mixed audiences and those with the ability, vision and enthusiasm to progress this agenda within their service. Download PDF.

“An extremely powerful play that mirrors real life experiences from women within the police arena. It cannot fail to provoke discussion and debate about the issues that really affect women.”

Liz Owsley, BAWP

Identity and Inspiration in the Probation Service

With a diversity week scheduled, we were approached by Essex Probation to design and deliver a series of bespoke events to run at the Probation Service offices across Essex.

Identity and Inspiration were the themes of the events, incorporating a 15 minute play focusing on four characters, an Offender Manager, Offender, Team Manager and Administrator.  It was experienced by 275 staff during the week.  The play realistically mirrored behaviours that were highlighted during our research involving a range of different staff.  The participants identified people who had inspired them in their lives.  They also explored communication tools and how to challenge people constructively.

Prison Service
Challenge it, Change it - The Prison Service goes large

How do you train a workforce of 48,000 in a consistent and innovative way? This was the challenge facing The Prison Service, who we have helped by providing training skills to over 800 personnel within the Prison Service. This will involve learning how to deliver a powerful, diversity message to all staff using specially prepared 'training tool kits’. At the heart of the kit is a high impact DVD, presenting issues that arise in the service. Training will cover how to use this material effectively and facilitate interactive events that will support diversity being embraced across the service.

We have worked across The Prison Service for many years, providing innovative sessions on staff conferences. These have included Shared Working, Safety and Decency, Public Protection, Diversity, Custody Planning, Prisoner Induction and Communication Skills.

Thames Valley Police
Together We Can

Thames Valley Police has joined forces with Oxford City Council to deliver an Embracing Diversity training programme for staff working in Oxford.  Partnership or multi-agency working is not new, and The Garnett Foundation has managed community partnerships around the country, many involving criminal justices agencies.  A diverse audience enhances the learning experience by providing a rich exchange of views and experiences, particularly around topics such as culture, diversity and social inclusion.

Courtroom Drama

The Garnett Foundation was commissioned to deliver a diversity core training programme for magistrates and legal advisers to explore perceptions, attitudes and behaviour in relation to Diversity matters in the Criminal Justice System.

Delegates from South Yorkshire observed a specially scripted scene depicting retiring room discussions between magistrates and legal advisers, which explored discrimination, prejudice and communication. From this scene and adopting the medium of forum theatre, delegates agreed solutions as a team and practised the skills involved in challenging stereotypical and discriminatory language and behaviour, in accordance with the Court Service's Competence Framework.

The event culminated in the development of goals in relation to supporting and promoting fair treatment towards all people and tackling inappropriate language and behaviour. It is significant to note that over 96% of the delegates agreed that they would recommend this event to another Magistrate and over 91% of delegates felt that the forum had a positive impact.

Metropolitan Police - Working together for a safer London
Match Fit for 2012 –
Metropolitan Police and Transport for London

The Metropolitan Police and Transport for London have joined together to run a series of training events, featuring the diversity play, The Challenge by Lisa Evans.

These events looked at a wide range of diversity issues and were inspired by the organisation's commitment to providing a service of excellence and underpinned by examining how people interact with their colleagues and the public.

"I want us all to celebrate everyone's outstanding contribution for everything that we do in the unit, and to remember the excellent work that is delivered day after day supporting Working Together for a Safer London."
Joe Royle, Chief Superintendent, Transport Operational Command Unit

Following on from the above training, we are designing in partnership with The Work Foundation, a programme to enhance the leadership skills of the Command in preparation for the 2012 Olympics.

Dealing with terrorist incidents DVD - Gloucestershire Constabulary

Following on from a very successful diversity training programme, Gloucestershire Constabulary invited The Garnett Foundation to assist in the production of a DVD film for a joint Police/Home Office high level exercise with partner agencies. The DVD covered various scenarios in real time, involving suspected terrorist incidents. This was used as a training tool to identify the steps required to resolve such incidents.
