Our Training Events

Our training events are designed to be informative, challenging and fun. They are developed in conjunction with our clients, to address specific learning outcomes. Through a series of interactive sessions the events will challenge perceptions, stimulate discussion and raise awareness. All our training is high impact and interactive and does not require individuals to stand up or act. As a result of attending training, all participants commit to a number of personal and organisational actions.

Programmes offered include:

Embracing Diversity

Incorporating a suite of options from full scale theatrical productions, monologues, forum theatre and interactive workshops and quizzes, these one or half day thought provoking sessions are excellent at raising awareness and exploring the diversity strands.

Learning outcomes:

  • Explore the opportunities and business case for diversity
  • Tackle issues surrounding discrimination, prejudice and communication
  • Understand the personal and organisational consequences of inappropriate behaviour
  • Promote organisational cultures that attract, develop and retain the best talent from across the community
  • Understand and challenge personal preconceptions and stereotypes
  • To be able to distinguish between bullying and banter in the workplace
  • To practice methods of challenging inappropriate behaviour

Recruiting a diverse workforce

A half day programme for all those with a responsibility for recruiting staff. Featuring actor monologues and scripted scene, delegates explore the recruitment progress including; Are we welcoming? Do our assumptions and unconscious responses affect our objectivity? Are we an attractive employer to all candidates?

Learning outcomes:

  • To challenge our own stereotypes within the recruitment process
  • To understand the implications of stereotyping on candidates
  • Identifying best practice in the selection interview
  • To practice the skills of interview and develop a best practice model
  • To develop sound practice in making recruitment and selection decisions
  • To create a diverse team that embraces diversity and works effectively to retain its staff

Customer service/care

Incorporating actor monologues and workshops this half day session is aimed at staff providing a service to external and internal customers.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand what customer care means and what standards are expected by the organisation
  • Appreciate the importance of the customer to the organisation, and how this impacts on customer retention and influencing positive customer feedback
  • Listening to people, practicing empathy skills, and controlling situations assertively
  • Understanding the needs of different people
  • Know how to handle difficult situations and customers
  • Projecting a positive image of yourself, your service, and your organisation

Conflict resolution

Involving forum theatre and skills development with actors this training is designed to help resolve interpersonal differences with work colleagues, customers and clients.

Learning outcomes:

  • Practice the skills needed to resolve conflict situations
  • Understand interpersonal difference that can lead to power-play and bullying
  • Learn empathy that results from seeing all perspectives and help create positive outcomes and solutions
  • Identify the key obstacles to handle conflict well
  • Creating a listening environment where people feel able to raise issues and are secure in how they will be managed
  • Identifying scales and levels of conflict
  • Understand the value of assertiveness and other interpersonal skills for effective communication and negotiation

Equality Impact Assessment

Tailored training for clients to assist staff to understand and undertake Equality Impact Assessments within their areas of responsibility.

Learning outcomes:

  • Have a working definition of relevant terms including Equality Impact Assessments (EQIA)
  • Understand the purpose and benefits of Equality Impact Assessments
  • Recognise the context of Diversity, Equality & Human Rights; and specifically how it relates to the organisation’s functions
  • Provide an insight into the information required to evidence decisions reached about the perceived and actual impact on target groups and human rights
  • Have an awareness of the national process for Equality Impact Assessment that will enable them to undertake the duty in relation to their work area
  • Understand the Equality Impact Assessments screening process and how to implement it
  • Understand the full Equality Impact Assessments process

The power of speech

A four hour programme designed to increase confidence and improve the skills of giving presentations to colleagues or clients and chairing meetings. The training will focus on articulation, projection and pronunciation. Designed for a maximum of 6 people and run by a trainer with a theatrical background. Our ways of working allow us to flex and adapt the session to meet the needs of the participants on the day.

Learning outcomes:

  • ‘Presenting’ What are we doing and why?
  • Enhancing self awareness; building confidence; posture; breathing and warm up techniques
  • Understanding the communication pie chart; non-verbal; verbal; text.
  • Developing practical vocal skills including; pitch, tone, clarity and breathing
  • How to overcome the barriers: Handling nerves/stress, recognising, understanding and reducing this negative effect. Relaxation
  • Delivering personal impact; energy / voice / eye contact / physicality
  • Skills of handling questions
  • Practising skills and techniques for effective communicating

Stop Bullying Now

A specially researched piece of theatre provides the focus for these half or one day events. Skills practice training and interactive workshops with actors help participants explore their leadership styles in a positive way, including challenging inappropriate behaviour.

  • Understand the impact of an organisation’s culture
  • Recognising bullying behaviour in all its forms
  • Understanding the reasons behind bullying and the effects
  • Adopt strategies to address and manage inappropriate behaviour
  • Appreciate the line between performance management and bullying behaviour
  • Embrace positive communication and dignity at work
  • Practice techniques to help people find a voice

Gender equality

The Gender Equality Duty comes into force in April 2007 requiring public authorities to promote gender equality and eliminate sexual discrimination. Our events are designed to tackle the issues affecting women in employment and explore the actions necessary to enable female employees to achieve their full potential.

Train the Trainer Packages (including a bespoke DVD)

The Garnett Foundation has designed and delivered a number of training packages, including research and filming of DVDs, delivery of training the trainer programmes, and design of training interventions for all staff. Our approach involves establishing the objectives the client wishes to achieve, and working from this position incorporating the skills of our professional scriptwriters, actors and facilitators.
